Product Description
Monitor the temperature of smoked meats from up to 100 feet away! Wireless receiver with LCD beeps and flashes when smoked meat temperature surpasses programmed temperature or if smoking chamber temperature falls out of programmed range. Receiver features count up/down timer, back lighting, belt clip and stand; transmitter has food probe wire, smoking chamber probe wire and stand/hanger. Can also be used with grills and ovens. Includes 4 AAA batteries.
I am just using this for the first time, the features are good, simple to setup. I found the same problem as others with range, it will work in the room just inside the patio door, but not the next room. Kind of limits the "remote" capability. I cannot speak for the probe yet, but I have a similar product made by Weber that has been no problem. When I thought it was, they replaced it free of charge no hassles, but it turned out to be a problem that causes me to have to reset that unit frequently.
The maximum range between the transmitter and receiver is no more than about 10 feet, even less if through a wall. The separation between the two units, so that I could monitor the cooking from inside the house, is the main reason I bought unit. Therefore, I give it one star. It does the job, otherwise.
I've owned this for four months, used it at least 20 times and overall I'm disappointed. My probes both burned out within a couple of days of each other after four months of use.
Pros:
- Great concept, and convenient if you're smoking anything large that may take several hours
- Dual smoker and meat probes are handy to have in one unit
- Easy to read LCDs
Cons:
- You have to remove the back cover of the sending unit each time you need to turn it off/on
- The range is quite poor, especially if your smoker is outside and you want to stay inside. I keep my smoker just outside my garage and I lose signal inside my house unless I keep the receiver on the counter right by my garage entrance, so the range is only about 25 to 30 feet.
- The temp probes on my unit seem to be consistently high by 5 to 8 degrees compared to my smoker's digital temp probe and other manual thermometers.
- Short lived
So many problems I'm sure I can't remember them all.
The radio distance is not 100 feet, it's more like 25-30...If there's a wall it might not work right on the other side.
One of the probes died within a couple months.
Trying to use the buttons to set temps, etc is an exercise in futility...you have to get the manual out every time you use it.
You have to turn the two units on in the right order!..AND it's not the order that would make sense. You have to disassemble one of them to turn it on! (3 parts that all fall apart)...the other unit has a microscopic switch buried in a hole with a thin plastic finger that will obviously break and of course it did.
The company wouldn't answer my emails.
Could it get worse?
I'll never buy another Maverick product.
I've owned this thermometer for about 1 1/2 years and used it probably 25 times or so. I use it with a Masterbuilt 7-in-1 smoker / cooker for smoking ribs, boston butt, chicken, turkey, etc.
Overall, I'm very happy with this product. The distance between the transmitter is usually about 20-30 feet but sometimes longer, and the connection is decent at this distance. One issue is that there is no alarm when the receiver is out-of-range... this just means that you have to be careful when you move it and make sure every once in a while that the temp is correct. Having two probes is great, particularly when I'm doing a pork shoulder or turkey. The 'usability' isn't perfect.... don't lose the manual because when you haven't set the upper/normal limits for the alarms in a few months you'll need it. It's not particularly intuitive. I don't usually use those alarms anyway though.
Pro's: temps are accurate, very handy to make sure that the temp inside your smoker is ok w/o having to run out to the grill every 15 minutes, easy display, alarms useful to have, battery life very good
Con's: no out-of-signal alarm, probe cord could be a bit longer, could be a little more user-friendly.
For the price, though, this is a great unit and I'd get it again in a heartbeat.
This unit is great for the low 'n' slow cookers. I wouldn't recommend it for the gas grill unless you're cooking turkeys and the like. I've used it a few times-once on a brisket, next on a 16 lb. prime rib, a couple of times on ribs (grill temp only), and last weekend on a couple of Boston butts. In each case, the thermo was dead-on and agreed with my Insta-Read. The prime rib was nerve wracking, because, at $240, it was the most expensive cut of meat I've ever cooked. Injected with 50/50 olive oil and Jack Daniels, it easily fed 12 people with leftovers. The alarm let me know when the internal temp hit 130, which was my time to pull it off the smoker.
As far as the remote goes, don't expect huge range out of it-maybe 30 feet through a single exterior wall. More'n likely, you'll be out checking the fire and grill temps anyway. What's great is not having to open the lid of the smoker to check temps. With the grill thermometer, you really start to understand how much the temp drops each time you open the lid, especially on cold days.
The investment in this unit will pay off in perfectly-cooked meats and avoiding the embarrassment of dry, overcooked Q.
This remote smoker thermometer works very well. We used it for a 5-hour project, and it provided accurate readings easily and clearly from the smoker ouside in the cold to inside the warm house.
I cannot comment yet on the probe issue as the other reviewer wrote. I have done 4 smokes with it over the past 2 weeks, and it works fine so far. I use the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker, a.k.a. the Weber "Bullet".
I really like not having to keep going out and checking the temps on the cooker. I can be elsewhere (like inside watching the game), watch the monitor and relax.
The temperature seems to correlate well with other thermometers I have. I stopped using my instant read thermometer.
The alarm function works well. You can set temp alarms for the cooker and the meat, both minimums and maximums. If the temp goes outside of the range, then it will ping you. Since my cooker runs cooler, I set my lower alarm temp just a bit lower than my desired cook temperature. So if it really does lose temperature, then the thing pings me. This avoids getting intermittent pings when the temp hovers right at the lower end. It also has a timer, which is helpful.
Four things I would change if I could:
1. The cable lengths are OK, but they could be longer. For my cooker, I usually have a little side table beside it. But some people might find the cables just a bit too short.
2. The so-called "belt clip" on the receiver is weak. It fell off my belt 2-3 times, so now I don't clip it on.
3. The box in which the thermometer comes isn't so great for repackaging. If you don't use the box again, this isn't a worry. If I was designing it, I would not make everything so compact. Maybe that's why the first reviewer's probe went bad, trying to cram everything back in the box.
4. The manual is only OK. I am pretty tech savvy, so it wasn't too much of a problem to figure out what it was trying to explain. But some might find it lacking.
But I'd recommend purchasing it, especially if you are more than just a novice smoker.
I have owned this thermometer for just under a year, used it maybe 10 times and the meat probe no longer works. I called Maverick and they said the probe is burned-out and must be replaced, for twelve bucks! They said that this is about the normal life of a probe.
The transmitter and remote do work well, but you will have to replace the meat probe often.
